History of Leticia in the Colombian Amazon:

Founded on the banks of the Amazon River in 1867 at the initiative of Peru under the name of San Antonio, Leticia adopted a new name and came under Colombian domination in 1928 with the signing of the Salomon Lozano Treaty.

Its history does not end there, however, since for several decades after this ratification, Leticia suffered from territorial wars. Colombia, Peru and Brazil are in conflict, each demanding their turn in this strategic territory, this gateway to the Amazon. Thanks to the intervention of the League of Nations, Leticia became a Colombian territory in 1934 and developed quietly by exploiting its eco-tourism potential.

- Tourism in Leticia and Puerto Nariño in the Amazon:

Known worldwide as the only Colombian city on the banks of the Amazon, Leticia has been a champion of the environment and indigenous peoples since 1996 during the ""International Meeting of Indigenous Peoples and Other Peoples Dependent on Forests, on the Management, Conservation and Sustainable Development of All Types of Forests"". Through this initiative, the city aims to preserve traditional knowledge and promote respect and participatory management of indigenous territories. A small revolution that will have very positive consequences in the long term: since then, the multitude of parks and nature reserves have made it possible to protect areas at risk while benefiting the regional and local economy.

The main attraction of Leticia is, of course, the majestic Amazon River, on which you will have the opportunity to sail to reach the various reserves. In these, you will have the chance to observe some of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the world! They are home to over 860 bird species, 140 amphibian species, 85 mammal species, 147 reptile species and nearly 6,800 plant species!

Not far from Leticia, Puerto Nariño is also a charming destination that has even been recognized by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Tourism as ""Colombia's first sustainable destination"" due to its good management of energy resources and its important role in protecting fauna and flora.

The area also boasts a remarkable cultural wealth. With the presence of a dozen indigenous peoples in the Colombian Amazon who have mixed over the centuries, Leticia is a land of truly unique ethnic diversity. During your stay, you will have the opportunity to learn about rituals, beliefs and know-how that only exist in this part of the world. An invaluable privilege and a cultural shock await you in this great adventure.

- Gastronomy and crafts of the Leticia region:

In Leticia, you can taste several exotic specialties such as Mojojoy (an Amazonian larva) and Pirarucu, one of the largest freshwater fish in the world! Several dishes are also made from cassava flour called Fariña, one of the basic elements of indigenous cuisine. In the markets, you will also find incredible pieces of traditional fabric made by the indigenous people. Often decorated with seeds, bark, feathers and fish scales, they are unique in their kind, real works of art!

- Celebrations:

One of the most spectacular events in Leticia is the Confraternity Festival, which takes place every year in July and brings the streets of the city to life with dances, concerts and other cultural events highlighting Amazonian folklore. If you are on Leticia at the end of November, you can also attend the numerous concerts of the International Festival of Popular Music of the Amazon “Pirarucu de Oro”. Finally, in April, the celebrations of Holy Week give rise to beautiful processions and gastronomic fairs that cannot be missed. In short, there is plenty to do!

- Practical information for a trip to Leticia in Colombia:

  • Be sure to get a yellow fever vaccination at least two weeks before your arrival in Leticia.

  • Mosquito repellent will be your best ally during your stay. For environmental reasons, use cream instead of spray.
  • Choose light, long-sleeved clothing and waterproof sports shoes.

  • Do not forget to hydrate regularly. The humidity and heat could play tricks.
